fashion

So… what’s haute this season? No, really, what does haute even mean?!?
Not sure? Well…
It’s the new “buzz word” in fashion that’s being thrown around like a trash
bag in the wind. In truth, I’m about ready to throw the word in the trash can.
We see fashion articles written all the time telling us what’s ‘haute’ as a
substitute for the word
hot

.
But, you probably didn’t know that in France, the term “haute couture” is
actually protected by law. It’s true. Fashion is taken very seriously. In fact, a
commission meets each year and determines which fashion houses live
up to the strenuous requirements to become legally entitled to refer to
their work as haute couture

. It’s so ironic how loosely the term is used
and abused in the US these days. We’ve reduced haute to meaning “cool.”

In much the same way, “stylists” and “designers” tout new and emerging
fashion trends as the new “in thing,” without a real understanding of
fashion. That’s not to say that all fashion commentators are clueless, but
the point is, there are no universal standards for what is considered
acceptable in fashion…not unless you buy into the myth that says there is.
Really, almost anything goes.

So, if you get a little frustrated with all the
fashion industry jargon and the hype that goes along with it, then, you’re in
good company. To be completely honest, it gets hard to figure out what’s
hot and what’s not and what the “new black” supposedly is.

And from the looks of the frightening make up jobs and awful get-ups that trot down the runway carried on the frail frames of models
that often resemble emaciated manikins, keeping up with today’s fashion can be quite intimidating for the everyday woman.
If you’re like the average woman who’s over 30 (or under 30 with a strong sense of self) you get wary of all the pop culture icons and
mainstream TV shows, mags and stylists telling you what not to wear.
I know I do… whether it’s haute or not.

Let me stress this point again: Haute couture

is a term reserved for the highest echelon of artistic creation in the world of fashion.
Translated, the term haute couture means “high sewing” or “high dressmaking.” It implies custom, artistic, one of a kind garments
that are designed and fitted for one specific individual. Haute couture clothing is typically made from the finest fabrics and trims, and
is sewn and embellished in the most professional way possible, which usually means by hand, regardless of the time or expense
necessary.
It’s probably safe to say then, that hardly anything we see these days is really “haute,”
